I have an MSI A6200 laptop running Windows 7 Home with the full version of Magic Engine 1.1.3 installed. I used to be able to run CD games perfectly, until my CD-ROM broke last week and had to be replaced.

Now for some reason MagicEngine won't recognize the CDs, even though they are seen by Windows and they even show all the CDA tracks when you explore them. Nothing has been changed in the PCE.INI file or anything else in the configuration. Any ideas what could have gone wrong? Help is much appreciated.

Is the replacement drive an exact original MSI part? Or a "compatible" one from a pop & mom shop? If not a real CD-ROM then is it some of those new, shiny BLU-RAY drives? Maybe the serial number can help if someone has the same drive as you... the more info the better always.

It's an original MSI replacement part. It's actually a DVD-RW drive, and it's able to read regular CDs without problems.

You need to have a closer look at your log file, which should tell you if your drive is actually detected or not.

You seem to have a few problems. First, you're missing an ASPI driver.

1. Either you get NeroASPI and copy the WNASPI32.DLL in your C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder (System32 if your OS is good old 32-bit).

2. Or you edit your pce.ini file and enter the following settings:

Code:

# ----
# cd-rom settings
# ----
#

[cdrom]

  ;
  ; CD-ROM driver
  ; --
  ;   0 -> auto-detect  [default]
  ;   1 -> SPTI (Windows NT)
  ;   2 -> ASPI
  ;

driver=1

  ;
  ; CD-ROM drive number
  ; --
  ; (Windows 9x only)
  ;
  ;   1 -> first  CD-ROM drive  [default]
  ;   2 -> second CD-ROM drive
  ;   ...
  ;

drive=

  ;
  ; CD-ROM drive letter
  ; --
  ; (Windows NT only)
  ;
  ;   D:
  ;   E:
  ;   ...
  ;

drive_letter=E:

  ;
  ; CD-ROM disk speed
  ; --
  ;   1 (min) .. 99 (max)  [default = 8]
  ;

speed=

  ;
  ; CD-ROM cache
  ; --
  ;   y -> enable  [default]
  ;   n -> disable
  ;

cache=

  ;
  ; CD-ROM cache size
  ; --
  ;   0 .. 8192 KB  [default = 512]
  ;

cache_size=

That said, according to your log, ME correctly detects your drive via SPTI but it fails to read your disc. Is it a copy? In which case, the disc TOC seems to be borked.

Also, ME complains it cannot find your syscard3.pce ROM. You need to get one, as the built-in Magic System doesn't work very well.

I tried editing the PCE.INI file just as you said, but the problem still persisted. The games I have are indeed copies, but they used to work perfectly with the old drive. Perhaps I should consider running them from the image files using alcohol 52% or daemon tools?

Just to be sure, you're using a real system card image and not the (still pretty good if you ask me) Magic System right? You never know...
