Hi, I have been trying to run Dracula X for the past two hours on Magic Engine, and I am getting REALLY frusturated! Every time I press load CD, and the System Card 3.0, it tells me "Load Error", after pressing the run button. Can someone please tell me what I might be doing wrong? Thanks!

Hi,

Be more specific. Which OS, ASPI installed or not, original copy or not... The usual stuff. Be aware that if it's a burnt copy, the problem could be anything from bad copy to unsupported drive -- which has nothing to do with Magic Engine.

'Load error': either it's a bad copy, or your original copy is scratchy, or you don't have any ASPI layer installed. Most probably this is the latter. SPTI support for NT/2K/XP doesn't seem to work for everyone.

Oh, and post your log.txt (only the last part of the file, the one beginning after #1).

OK, have a look at Adaptec and get the ASPI driver thats suits your OS. Ah, and grab ASPI Test in order to activate the IDE support in the ASPI layer (it's disabled by default).

The log file should be present in your Magic Engine folder (log.txt). Look into your pce.ini configuration file for the debug log option and check that it's enabled.

Sounds complicated? It's not. Better get used to the NT world...

I'm not sure. In the glorious days of unfriendly competition, it used to require the presence of at least one Adaptec piece of hardware installed (an Adaptec SCSI adapter, an Adaptec CD-ROM drive, whatever). You should nevertheless give it a try since I believe the Adaptec policy has softened in recent times.

Your log seems OK up to the TOC reading at the end, but after that there's definitely a problem. Only 1 track for Dracula X? No way... Either ME needs the ASPI layer (you'd better install it anyway) or your copy is not burnt correctly (or the rip is plainly bad).

Since you're under XP and it shouldn't even need ASPI for the CD to work correctly, I'd tend to believe your copy is bad... Anyway, it's worth doing a serious check. You'll first have to modify the following lines to your pce.ini file ("ASPI layer" is a hidden option that you need to add in):

Code:

# ----
# CD-ROM settings
# ----

[cdrom]

  ;
  ; ASPI layer
  ; --
  ;   forces ASPI under Windows 2000/XP
  ;
  ;   y -> enable ASPI
  ;   n -> enable SPTI [default]
  ;

use_aspi=y

  ;
  ; CD-ROM drive
  ; --
  ;   0 -> first  CD-ROM drive [default]
  ;   1 -> second CD-ROM drive
  ;   ...
  ;

drive=0

  ;
  ; CD-ROM drive letter
  ; --
  ;   (Windows 2000/XP only)
  ;
  ;   D:
  ;   E:
  ;   ...
  ;

drive_letter=

Then install the ASPI driver, run ASPI Test to activate the IDE support, reboot, launch Magic Engine, roll out Dracula X and see what happens.

If it bombs, report back your log file again (only the #1 part, as usual).

Ok, I installed the drivers...but the test program doesn't seem to work right. I run the program, and click upgrade. And it says "You should upgrade the ASPI layer. Launch the aspiinst.exe utility."

I don't know where that exe file is??

That's just the ASPI package you donwloaded from Adaptec.

Did you reboot in-between (after installing the ASPI driver and before running ASPI Test)? When you run ASPI Test, the small window should indicate your new installed version (most probably 4.60 or 4.71). Click on Registry, then OK. Reboot and try Magic Engine with the setting modifications I described above.

Ok I got them installed. I tried the CD again, and it gives me the same error. Do I need to reburn the CD after installing the drivers?

Are you sure you modified your pce.ini file like I described above? The default SPTI (NT SCSI) driver still seems to be used instead of your newly installed ASPI driver. Please verify:

Code:

# ----
# CD-ROM settings
# ----

[cdrom]

  ;
  ; ASPI layer
  ; --
  ;   forces ASPI under Windows 2000/XP
  ;
  ;   y -> enable ASPI
  ;   n -> enable SPTI [default]
  ;

use_aspi=y

Note that you have to copy and paste the above option by hand since it's a hidden option. It's important to enable use_aspi=y otherwise the NT driver will still be used, and I won't be able to clearly determine if the driver is at fault or if your game rip is a bad one.

Code:

  ;
  ; CD-ROM drive
  ; --
  ;   0 -> first  CD-ROM drive [default]
  ;   1 -> second CD-ROM drive
  ;   ...
  ;

drive=0

I forgot to specify the driver number in my previous post.

Code:

  ;
  ; CD-ROM drive letter
  ; --
  ;   (Windows 2000/XP only)
  ;
  ;   D:
  ;   E:
  ;   ...
  ;

drive_letter=

Leave the option blank.

Ok...I changed the stuff, and Magic Engine wont even load. It just gives me a black screen, and i have to ctrl+alt+delete it to exit it. Grrr...I'm about to throw the computer through the wall. When I installed the ASPI driver, should I have put it in the Magic Engine directory?

Note to David: this log is unexpectedly interesting... I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the drive= and drive_letter= may be redundant? Huh, wait... There's this error message 'scanning ASPI devices... no adapter found'... I don't quite get it Confused

Anyway, back to our stuff, SteamTrain... Basically your INI is OK, but there's an error in your drive settings. You need to type the number of your drive, not the letter. The numbers are for ASPI, the letters are for NT (don't ask me why).

Replace drive=D: with drive=0 (the number 'zero'). We should get it right this time.
